How to Eat Healthy and Save Money
A major excuse for people not to eat healthy is that they think it costs a lot more money to eat healthy and less expensive to eat junk food or fast food. This is a big misconception that most people have on healthy eating. In general, when eating out at a fast food restaurant you will spend anywhere from $5-$7 per person on a meal. However, the cost of cooking at home averages to be about $1.50-$3 per person.
For example, burgers, fries and drinks at McDonald's costs $28 for a family of four. At home, it costs about $12 for four people. Plus, you are eating foods filled with nutrients that are going to make you look and feel better than ever before.
If not having time to cook meals is your issue, then think again. To get changed, get in the car, drive to a fast food place about 3 miles away, order, wait in line, pay, get your food, check the bag, drive back 3 miles to the house, go inside and eat your food can actually take you about 30 minutes. Think it's shorter than that? Time yourself next time you go out. Preparing a home cooked meal, from the first chop to plating, would take about 25 minutes or less. Don't let what you think something is blind you from what it really is.
Here are things to look for at the grocery store to help you save money and will allow you to create meals with leftovers saving you money and time.
- Chicken Thighs
- Chicken breast tenders
- Whole chicken
- Lean Ground Beef
- Lean Ground Turkey
Fruits & Vegetables:
- Buying your fruits and veggies in season will save you a ton of money
- Check for sales on fruits and vegetables
- Buy frozen
- Canned beans will make many different kinds of meals and will last forever
- Quinoa and Rice dishes are inexpensive and usually make a lot for leftovers
- White Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes are a great side dish that will feed a lot inexpensively
Don't be fooled by the theory that eating healthy is expensive because it will cost the same and usually less than eating unhealthy AND you gain an endless amount of benefits from added energy, weight loss, happiness, fueling your body with proper nutrients, healing your body from certain health issues.
